Good portrait photography requires time, skill and rapport with the subject.
Portraiture is about capturing the ‘likeness’ of a person, often what people call the ‘essence’ of somebody. This is quite a subjective thing. I take the time to bring out the essential qualities of every subject. It is often said there is a ‘decisive moment’ in getting the best impression of a person, photographing a subject at just the right time. This is something that comes with the experience of dealing with people and making others feel comfortable and relaxed in front of the camera. It is a skill to get past that initial stage of nerves, maybe a bit of bluster in front of the lens (who doesn’t do this?) and getting to the point where the person is quietly confident, relaxed, and comfortable in their own skin. Part of the satisfaction of the job is seeing how a photograph can subtly transform how a person perceives themselves. It’s one of the things that makes portraiture so interesting and rewarding. After the initial set-up of lights and location, photography can usually be completed within a very timely fashion for each subject. ‘Working’ portraits are often a good option, and can sometimes be completed with ambient light.
